IN IRELAND, TEA is everything. It’s comforting, sustaining, it brings people together – but it can also tear them apart.
It’s time to face the facts: Irish people have an unhealthy relationship with tea.
1. We cannot leave the country without it
According to a new survey by Bank of Ireland, one third of Irish people bring their own tea abroad. ONE THIRD.
We’d probably forget the passport before we’d forget the tea. Be honest.
2. Friendships have been made and lost over teabag brands
She’s Barrys. You’re Lyons. How will you ever get through this?
3. Not offering a cuppa is akin to a slap in the face
Well, you could slap us in the face, but if you offered us a cuppa after it’d make it all OK.
4. And the list of tea-making faux pas is never ending
Putting the milk in before the tea? Get out. Failing to heat the cup? Get out. Not leaving it to brew properly? GET OUT.
5. Whole days revolve around the next cup of tea
Breakfast, elevenses, afternoon break, after dinner. Like clockwork.
6. So running out of milk can genuinely ruin it
Want to see an Irish person Hulk out? Put an empty carton of milk back in the fridge.
7. We’re incredibly snooty about other types of tea
Get away with your green tea, your Earl Grey, your camomile and whatever else. We’re not about that life.
8. And if you don’t drink it, you’re basically a social pariah
You don’t drink tea? Then what are we supposed to DO with you?
